Background

Rankings are meant to cause controversy.

We all have our own opinions about who the NBA’s “Top 10” players are. But when you actually sit down and try to order them, a seemingly simple task quickly becomes a daunting challenge.

“I think Shai is better than Wemby,  but Jokic is better than Shai, but Wemby is better than Jokic?”

Research is my day job, so when I see a problem, my instinct is to look to science for a solution. That led me to develop a systematic way to determine who we believe the NBA’s best players are.

Enjoy100 uses an Elo rating system calculated using the following equations:

EB=11+10(RA−RB)/400E_B=\frac{1}{1+10^{(R_A-R_B)/400}}
RA′=RA+K(SA−EA)R'_A=R_A+K(S_A-E_A)
RB′=RB+K(SB−EB)R'_B=R_B+K(S_B-E_B)

Elo ratings are commonly used in online chess, competitive video games, skill-based matchmaking and even some dating-app ranking systems. Don’t worry, you won’t need to do any math. Enjoy100 handles that part for you.

  • RThe player’s current rating
  • EThe player’s expected chance of being selected
  • SWinning player, S = 1 Losing player, S = 0
  • KHow strongly each matchup changes the ratings

In the Game

First, select your player pool. The more players you include, the more time and matchups you’ll need to finalize your rankings.

Next, choose the size of the ranking you want to create, from a Top 5 or Top 10 all the way up to a Top 100.

You’ll then receive a continuous series of one-on-one matchups. For each matchup, select the player you believe is better.

What definition of “better” should I use?

Any definition you’d like.

You might prioritize current performance, long-term talent, playoff reliability, career accomplishments or simply who you would rather have on your team. These are your rankings, so have fun with them.

To help you make each decision, the player cards provide additional information, including:

  • Season averages
  • Advanced statistics
  • Career accolades
  • NBA 2K ratings
  • Position and team information

Every selection updates the players’ Elo ratings and helps determine where they belong on your list.
